ODEAN POPE
If you've ever heard him, you know he's one of most exciting tenor saxophonists in jazz (and the master of circular breathing). A virtuoso musician who was featured soloist last year with the Philadelphia Orchestra on Duke Ellington's The Three Black Kings, Odean has been a member of the Max Roach Quartet for two decades, a prestigious association.Odean has his own musical vision, most fully expressed via his Saxophone Choir (nine saxophones + rhythm section), with three widely-acclaimed CDs on Soul Note. The choir was the surprise hit at the 1999 Seixal Jazz Festival in Portugal, but if that's more than you can afford, consider Odean's trio, with Tyrone Brown on bass (also in Max’s quartet), and Craig McIver (a member of Max’s M’Boom). Just listen to Odean's trio CD on Enja, Ninety-Six, or the more recent EBIOTO, on the Knitting Factory label, and you'll be sold.
With either the Trio or
Saxophone Choir you get great music, and if you're in the Mid-Atlantic region, you can get fee support from Pennsylvania Performing Arts on Tour (call for details). A fall 2001 Trio tour with David Murray as special guest is in the works, so get on board. Jack DeJohnette and Michael Brecker love Odean too, and if available, will tour with him: Jack replacing Craig in the trio, Michael with the choir.Click Here for More Biographical Info
